Garden--Version 2011

We've had a shaky start to our garden this year. We had the ground plowed up (doubling our growing space), then it started to rain. And rain. And rain some more.

The lettuce and radishes are in a semi-raised bed. The rain moved the seeds around and we lost quite a bit, but we'll replant lettuce when it cools off this fall.

Rick, Betty (his mom), and the girls have been helping to get the starts into the ground today. They're working on "Uncle Gene beans" here. Uncle Gene beans are like a black and white striped lima bean. I'm sure they have an official name, but that's what we call them because the seeds came from Rick's Uncle Gene! Makes sense, eh?

Brandie was getting really good at getting the bean starts planted.

Haleigh learns the fine art of making the hole.

We, well, Rick and the girls started seeds about six weeks ago in little cups and in some of those starter thingies you find this time of year. (I got them at a garage sale last year for $.25! Score!) They did really well.....until we couldn't get them into the ground because of the rain. Everything started looking a little leggy, but we think they'll all make it!

I'm linking to She Considers. Olivia is hosting "From 2011 Seeds to Harvest Garden Challenge". Go check out how everyone else is doing!

Love your little house! :)

Hey, I discovered you can reuse those little jiffy pots if a seedling dies. Either plant something new or just let it dry out til next time you need it.

Did you use some kind of light for your seedlings or just have them there by the window?

I look forward to seeing some of those striped beans! How neat :)

I am also curious to see those striped beans! :-) I haven't ever started seeds indoors. I think I fear what my toddler would do to the house with pots of dirt sitting around! LOL

Thank you so much for the nice comments!

Hansberrys--I had no idea you could reuse those little pots! I'll see if Rick kept them.

We just had the seedlings near our big window in the dining room. We'd rotate them every few days as they started growing toward the light. Once they popped up we started hardening them off by putting them on plastic shelves on the back portch and then dragging them into the garage if the temperature was going to go below 45 or so during the evening.

And the little house actually belogs to our neighbors. :-( Rick has the garden right up to the property line. Luckily, no one lives there right now.

Jeremiah and Stephenie--We didn't have a problem with our kids and the pots of dirt....but we did have a problem with our CATS! For some reason they thought they could hop up and sleep amongst the seedlings!

If those Uncle Gene Beans produce at all, we'll have enough for the entire town! I'll have to send y'all some! :-)
